If you experience neck pain on a daily basis, come into Hopkins Health and Wellness Center. By implementing the DMR method, we are able to address your pain from a holistic perspective. In addition to our chiropractic services, we are able to work with you to help make lifestyle changes that will help you cope with neck pain on a daily basis. Chiropractic care may be the most effective and efficient way to deal with neck pain, but that doesn’t mean you can’t supplement it with small steps that can make a large difference.

Stretch When You Wake Up

The way you start your day determines how the rest of it will go. When you wake up in the morning, treat your body to some stretches to prevent back pain. Start with a forward fold. From standing, lean over and touch your toes, allowing your head to hang loosely for a few moments. This yoga pose will stretch out your back, giving yourself a good start to the day.

Prevent Text Neck

Chiropractors are seeing more and more young people come in for neck pain because of a new phenomenon called “text neck.” Essentially, the way we look down at our smartphones strains the neck muscles, causing neck pain. To prevent text neck, do not look down at your phone; prop it so it is eye level when you are using it.

Use the Headrest in the Car

Unfortunately, even if you avoid looking down at your phone to prevent text neck, it doesn’t mean you can escape neck pain. Many of us spend all day staring at computer screens, increasing tension in the neck. Avoid spending your entire day with your neck at an angle by resting your head on the headrest of your seat when you drive. This naturally raises your chin and takes pressure off your shoulders and neck.

Move During the Day

So many people live sedentary lifestyles, sitting for hours at a desk then going home to hang out on the couch. This puts a lot of strain on our necks and backs, and can cause pain. Combat this by making a point to move and stretch out your muscles every hour. Even if it is just a quick lap around your office building, making a point to move is crucial to reducing the pain you experience.

Use a Heating Pad

At the end of a long day, you may have a lot of muscle tension in your neck. Relax your muscles when you get home by using a heating pad on your neck. The heat will feel amazing on your sore muscles.
